Walk your own site: a 15-minute physical security check

You do not need a consultant to learn a lot about your physical security. You need fifteen minutes, a notepad or phone, and a willingness to look at your building the way an outsider would. Walk the route below, write down what you see, and you will have a useful list before anyone else is involved.

Your answers are scored in your browser and are not stored or sent to us. This check is a starting point, not a security audit.

Start at the edge

  • Parking and approach. Is it well lit? Can you see the entrance from inside? Are there hiding spots near doors?
  • Perimeter. Are fences, gates, and landscaping in good repair, or do they create blind areas?
  • Signage. Is it clear which doors are public and which are not?

Check every door

  • Main entrance. Who sees people arrive? Is there a clear check-in process?
  • Side and back doors. Do they close and latch properly? Are any propped open? Who has keys or badges?
  • Loading and delivery areas. Are deliveries supervised, and can someone walk in behind a delivery?
  • Windows and glass. Can anyone reach in or see valuables from outside?

Look at the inside

  • Reception. Can visitors walk past the front desk without being noticed?
  • Sensitive spaces. Server rooms, records, cash, medications, inventory, and tools: are they locked, and who can open them?
  • After-hours access. Who can enter at night, and how would you know if someone did?

Look at what you already have

  • Cameras. Do they cover entrances, cash areas, parking, and key interior spaces? Are the images clear enough to identify a person? Are any blocked or pointing the wrong way?
  • Alarms. Does someone respond when they sound? Are they tested?
  • Lighting and clocks. Is footage time-stamped correctly, and are dark areas covered?

Rank your findings

Sort your list into three groups: fix this week (propped doors, burned-out lights), fix this quarter (missing cameras, key control), and plan this year (access system upgrades). Quick, inexpensive fixes often make the biggest difference.

Bring in a second opinion

A fresh set of eyes sees things you have stopped noticing. A professional walkthrough can confirm your priorities, identify gaps, and suggest options that fit your building and budget.
